HDR10 & Dolby Vision calibration

HDR can reveal more detail in bright areas. How well it does this depends on the content, device, picture mode and tone mapping. I measure these factors and adjust your setup accordingly.

HDR10 is included from Professional, Dolby Vision from Premium, subject to device compatibility. We will discuss any additional formats and the exact scope in advance.

Where HDR falls short in practice

These are the factors I check when adjusting your HDR picture modes.

  • EOTF tracking is inaccurate

HDR10 uses an absolute luminance curve (PQ, ST 2084). Deviations can make midtones appear too dark or too bright. I measure the response and adjust it to ST 2084 as far as the device's picture controls and tone mapping allow.

  • Tone mapping is poorly matched

When content requires higher luminance than your device can produce, tone mapping must adapt the signal. I assess the available settings against the measured display luminance and intended use.

  • Highlights are clipped

Clipping in bright areas means lost detail. I check signal levels and tone mapping to find a suitable setting. Calibration cannot overcome the device's physical luminance and contrast limits.

  • Dolby Vision has its own requirements

Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata and device-specific processing. The Premium package includes separate adjustment of the Dolby Vision mode on supported devices. Differences in mastering and processing may still be visible.

What the calibration aims to achieve

  • Consistent luminance reproduction within the supported HDR format
  • As much highlight detail as possible through appropriate tone mapping
  • Colour reproduction matched to the source format and the device's available gamut
  • Separate adjustment of the agreed SDR and HDR picture modes
  • Dolby Vision calibration with the Premium package on compatible devices
  • Documented results and settings as a reference for future checks

Frequently asked questions

There are several possible reasons: content mastering, ambient light, picture mode, EOTF deviations or tone mapping. Measurements help identify the cause. A difference in brightness compared with SDR does not necessarily indicate a calibration error.
It can be especially worthwhile on a projector. Since a projector cannot reach the luminance used for mastering, tone mapping is crucial to the result. Matching it to the measured screen luminance is one of the most significant adjustments for HDR projection.
Devices store separate picture modes for SDR and HDR, so each is adjusted individually. Both are included from the Professional package, with one appointment and one invoice.
Firmware updates may reset picture settings or change internal processing. Documented settings help you check for changes, but further measurements may be needed if the display's behaviour has changed.
