Get your projector calibrated

A projector is never defined by its panel alone but by the interplay of light source, lens, screen fabric and room. That interplay is exactly what I measure.

JVC, Sony, Epson, Barco, BenQ and Optoma. On-site service, because the screen is part of the measurement.

Why projectors need a different approach

With a TV, you measure the panel. With a projector, you measure a system.

  • The screen affects colour

Screen materials can change the spectral composition of reflected light. Grey materials, high-gain surfaces and ALR screens can shift the white point significantly. I therefore always measure the light reflected from the screen, rather than the projector's light output at the lens.

  • The room affects the picture

Light-coloured walls and ceilings reflect light back onto the screen, raising the black level. Measurements are taken with the room set up as you actually watch films, rather than under ideal conditions that do not reflect your use.

  • Light sources age

UHP lamps lose considerable light output over their lifetime and their colour temperature shifts. Laser and LED light sources are more stable, but they also drift. Lamp-based projectors therefore need follow-up measurements much sooner than TVs.

  • HDR requires a trade-off

No projector reaches the peak luminance used to master HDR content. Tone mapping must decide how to compress highlights. I match this response to your measured screen luminance rather than a manufacturer's assumption.

  • Establish a realistic colour gamut

Many projectors reach DCI-P3 only with a filter, at a noticeable cost in light output. I measure what your device actually delivers on your screen, then discuss whether the filter is worth that loss.

  • Documentation

You receive a PDF report covering the agreed measurements, documented settings and measured screen luminance. Before-and-after comparisons require measurements taken under comparable conditions.

What to prepare before your appointment

To make the appointment efficient, it helps to have the following ready:

  • The projector is in its final position, with the ceiling mount installed and throw distance and zoom set
  • The screen is installed, and you know its type and gain where specified
  • The room can be darkened as it would be for normal film viewing
  • The lamp or laser operating hours are known, as these affect the assessment
  • Your source devices are confirmed: player, streaming box and any video processor in the signal chain

If the installation is not complete, please still get in touch. Sometimes it makes more sense to arrange calibration after installation; I will explain this in advance rather than make two trips.

How much does a projector calibration cost?

Professional is the standard package for SDR and HDR10. JVC, Sony and Epson do not support Dolby Vision; for projectors that do, I check in advance whether a calibration path exists. We agree the scope to suit your signal chain.

If you use a madVR Envy or Lumagen, madVR 3D-LUT Complete starts at €2,299 and provides reference-level calibration. Complete 3D LUTs are calculated instead of individual correction points, with native resolutions up to 256³ on Envy and 17³ on Lumagen.

Frequently asked questions

Having a projector calibrated costs €399 (Basic, SDR), €499 (Professional, SDR and HDR10) or €599 (Premium, adding Dolby Vision), each including VAT plus travel, because the measurement takes place on your screen. Travel is free within the 350xx postcode area, otherwise €0.80 per kilometre for the round trip. The configurator shows the total for your postcode.
Lamp-based projectors need more frequent checks than TVs because UHP lamps lose noticeable light output and drift in colour temperature with use. Laser and LED projectors retain their calibration for longer. I can advise on a suitable interval based on your operating hours.
Honestly, not always. If the device lacks a useful colour management system and multipoint white balance controls, meaningful correction is limited. Tell me the model; if I would advise against calibration, I will say so by phone before you incur any costs.
Generally not. The crucial measurements are taken from the screen, and screen material, room reflections and light control cannot be assessed fully from a distance. I calibrate projectors on site.
Audio calibration is handled by my partner Nils at FM-Audio. You can enquire about a suitable audio service through the configurator. The audio part of your enquiry is passed to FM-Audio for processing; scope and scheduling are agreed before booking.
